Lion-Proof Boma Upgrades

About the Project

Every night, Maasai families in the Naretunoi Conservancy go to sleep not knowing if their livestock will survive until morning.

A single lion attack can wipe out a family's entire life savings. Livestock is not just income here β€” it is the Maasai bank account, the school fees, the wedding dowry, the emergency fund. Lose the cattle, lose everything.

The response has always been the same. Hunt the lion. Protect the herd.

We are changing that equation permanently.

Naretunoi is installing solar-powered Lion Lights and high-tensile steel fencing across 15+ high-risk family bomas in the conservancy. Tested. Proven. Maintenance-free. When a predator approaches, the lights trigger automatically β€” lions associate the flashing light with danger and turn back.

No lion dies. No livestock dies. No family loses everything overnight.

By investing in this project you are not just saving lions. You are making conservation economically viable for the families who live alongside wildlife every single day.

15 Families. 15 Bomas. Here Is Where We Stand

We have completed the ground-level assessment across the Naretunoi Conservancy. We know exactly which 15 bomas are highest risk. We know which predator corridors the lions use. We know which families have lost livestock in the last 12 months.

Now we need to act before the next attack happens.

WHERE WE ARE NOW

β€” 5 bomas fully identified and mapped along active predator corridors

β€” Solar durability testing completed with local technicians

β€” Ubuntu Boma model adopted as our installation standard

β€” Community herders trained on light positioning and basic maintenance

 β€” 10 remaining bomas identified

 β€” installation pending funding

WHAT ONE BOMA COSTS

KES 30,000 fully protects one family boma with solar Lion Lights and reinforced fencing. That is one family whose livestock is safe. One family who stops losing sleep. One family who no longer has a reason to hunt a lion.

15 bomas. KES 450,000. Zero lion deaths.

LENA'S STORY

One of the first community members to benefit from the Ubuntu Boma model described it simply β€” she now sleeps like a child. Her cattle are safe. Her family is safe. The lions are safe.

That is what KES 30,000 buys. Not equipment. Peace.

We are bringing that same peace to 15 more families at Naretunoi.

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE

KES 30,000 β€” fully protects one family boma KES 15,000 β€” covers solar lights for one boma KES 5,000 β€” contributes fencing materials for one household

The "Ubuntu Boma" Standard: Why We Choose This Model

We are inspired by the impact seen in the community, such as Lena’s story, where the "Ubuntu Boma" model has brought total peace to herders. Lena, a local leader, now "sleeps like a child" because her livestock is safe from lions. At Naretunoi, we are adopting this high-standard, proven technology to protect the next 15 households in our sector. Seeing this success drives us to bring that same peace to our families.
